Drinking Coffee in Saudi Arabia
As world countries these days became more close to each other, the whole world became one small village, and people around the universe are now one small community. It is important for everyone to understand different cultures in different parts of the world. In a very important and sensitive part of the world particularly Saudi Arabia, we find the real Arabic customs and traditions of Arabic people.A very interesting thing about this culture is how they serve food and drinks.
First of all, the food in Saudi Arabia is served as any part of the world three times a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). All meals are served on the floor, where people sit and use their own hands to eat the food that would be served in one big plate for everyone having that meal. Mum, dad and all siblings would be sitting in the floor enjoying the meal which is most often rice with of meat, chicken or fish.
Secondly, drinks are served differently in Saudi Arabia than other cultures. One very interesting example of that is the way people serve the traditional coffee to guests where they use small cups in that. In Arabic culture acts say more than word do, if you fill up the cup of coffee for some one it culturally means “drink it and go away, we do not want you around in our place” which is very rude, however, if you fill up half of it means “stay and ask for more coffee, we want you around us and we are enjoying you being our guest”, that’s why everyone serving the coffee is very careful from putting more than the half because it would be rude for the person drinking the coffee. Another thing is when you are finished with the coffee you have to shake the cup if you do not want more coffee otherwise the host will keep giving you coffee till it finished.
Learning about customs, cultures and tradition is very important nowadays as people now are mixing and most of the world countries becoming multicultural societies. Whether you travel abroad or stay at home you might need to learn about these things because you may meet people who have different background than yours.
